Costa Blanca Bike Race

Pure Mountains decamped to Alicante province recently for the four day Costa Blanca Bike Race.

Jenny was racing in a female pair with great friend of Pure Mountains, Tatiana from Stockholm. Tim and Johan were their fabulous support crew and master bike mechanics. They shared Jesper, the tech zone wizard, with another team.

CBBR is a marvellous stage race, which takes in the beautiful, pointy mountains and coastal paths around Benidorm. There’s a huge percentage of singletrack, some of it quite technical. Three of the stages were around 50km long, with an average 1500m of climbing. The other day was a 14km time trial up Spain’s steepest paved road, which maxes out at 43%!

Jenny raced on a hardtail for the first time: the exceptionally nimble, carbon, Canyon Grand Canyon SLX. She said:

“I chose the hardtail because I’m comparatively slow on the climbs and fast on the descents. This bike helped to even that out. It’s a rocket uphill. I had to be a bit careful on the steep, loose and rooty descents. I fell off a couple of times overdoing the descents, but the bike was great fun and a big advantage on the long climbs.”

Jenny and Tatiana came second in the women’s master category. It would be great to see more women at mountain bike stage races. If you’re tempted, this is a great one to start with; it’s a manageable length, with good weather and easy logistics.
